Attending on behalf of the ANZ Branch were Corrina James MICS, Education Officer, and Norman Lopez FICS, Chair of the ICS Global Education & Training Committee. They were joined by two outstanding students, Ai Vi Nguyen and Harkaran Cheema, both of whom recently achieved distinctions in their ICS examinations. In recognition of their academic excellence, each student was awarded a $200 prize in the presence of the AMC Principal, senior faculty and numerous, professional and past alumni, at an event in the evening before the Expo. Norman spoke to the collective audience about how the University of Tasmania, the AMC and the ICS worked closely together to fuse academic and professional qualifications, and that we, the ICS, recognised past alumni in our Awards. The applause for the two awardees was resounding. Notably, whilst one student was a local, another student travelled from Melbourne to attend the event and are alumni of the AMC.
The ICS presence at the Expo generated significant interest among attendees, with many students and professionals engaging with the team to learn more about the Institute's educational pathways. Particular attention was given to the Foundation Diploma, Advanced Diploma, and the Professional Qualifying Examinations (PQE) programme, all of which continue to play a vital role in developing the next generation of maritime professionals.
A key highlight of the event was a presentation delivered by Norman Lopez, who addressed a full room of students and industry professionals. His insights into global maritime education, professional standards, and career progression were well received and sparked meaningful discussion among attendees.
The event also served to strengthen the already positive relationship between ICS and AMC. The presence of Ai Vi Nguyen and Harkaran Cheema as high-achieving AMC alumni exemplifies the success of this collaboration, underscoring a shared commitment to advancing industry knowledge and supporting professional growth within the maritime sector.
In addition to engaging with students, the ICS team established valuable connections with other maritime organisations at the Expo, further expanding opportunities for collaboration and industry engagement across the region.
Looking ahead, the ICS ANZ Branch will continue its outreach efforts and is pleased to announce its participation in the upcoming AIMS Conference 2026, to be held in Perth in early May 2026. This event will provide another platform to promote ICS programmes and strengthen ties within the maritime community.
Through initiatives such as the AMC Career Expo, ICS remains dedicated to fostering education, supporting excellence, and building meaningful partnerships that contribute to the future of the global shipping industry.
