This year we started early with the first of our Open Days being held in Manila on 30 May, after the first day of the course organised by Magsaysay Learning Resources Inc. - MLRI, "A Practical Approach to Commercial Shipping". The event was possible thanks to the leadership of Alexander Querol, President of MLRI, with assistance of Mae T. Bereña, Deputy Head of Operations, Murrieza Rondera, Program Supervisor, Princess Zaira V. Gonzales, Sales and Marketing Supervisor and the whole team at MLRI.

Leif Ollivierre MICS attended on behalf of the Institute togerther with YK Chan FICS (Life) from Hong Kong as the Institute's Ambassador and Capt. Norman Lopez FICS, from the Australia/New Zealand Branch joined as a member of Education and Training Committee.

The guests asked many questions about the Institute and the programmes available and left the event interested in the Institute's Professional Qualifications.

North East of England Branch

NEE Open Day

The North East of England Branch had a very successful Open Evening.

It was the first of many open evenings held to launch the branch's new North East School of Shipping (NESS) based at Stockton Riverside College (SRC). The turnout was excellent, with students (new and existing) from businesses who usually support the Institute: they came along with their managers to meet the new school team and see the college facilities. Students from businesses who had not been involved with the Institute before also joined in this time. Surprisingly one of the guests was a lady who spent 20 years working in shipping in Venezuela: she is looking at an Institute qualification as the passport for a job in the UK!

All of the 8 students in attendance signed up to start the courses starting soon at our new North East School of Shipping.
