Rewarding Shipping Excellence in Denmark

ICS IN DENMARK - new blood joining the Branch

Our colleagues in Denmark are thriving. It is high time we shed some light on both the Branch and International Teaching Centre centre as shining examples of education facilitation at its very best.

Talking to Jesper Sebbelin FICS, Director ITC Denmark, you realise how passionate the team there is about educating young people in the shipping industry and rewarding the worthy. Offering shipping qualifications to all and awarding the deserving with further study opportunities, they are the beacon of our Institute values.

"Jesper leads the Denmark International Teaching Centre (ITC) and has been brilliant at integrating ICS materials and programmes into the official Danish shipping education system and apprenticeship schemes," says Matt Gilbert, Head of Business and Partnerships, ICS.

Danish Shipbrokers and Port Operators has been an ITC of the Institute since 1991. The ITC in Denmark provides information about ICS TutorShip and manages the registration of students for the ICS exams twice a year. On 01 January 2020, the Danish Shipbrokers' Association merged with the port operators and became the Danish Shipbrokers and Port Operators.

Every year, ITC Denmark awards one student from their 2-year shipping business study programme with "the best student" honour.

And the winner is……

The prize winner for best student prize among the two 2019 classes completing in October 2021 has been announced as Mikkel Bøgstrup. Mikkel is currently completing his two-year shipping/chartering traineeship with Uni-Tankers in Denmark.

The best student is judged on their social skills, such as their ability to communicate, as well as their subject matter and shipping knowledge.

Mikkel says "I'm truly honoured to receive this prize, and it was such a surprise when I was in a meeting and Jesper popped up on the screen to congratulate me! I really enjoy the tanker business but with this study, you get a broad understanding of the breath of shipping and a deeper insight into all aspects of maritime. It's the best of both worlds."

The prize given to Mikkel is participation in the Shipping Business Course with ICS TutorShip, and the exam fee and the annual study fees are all sponsored by Denmark ITC. "I am personally pleased about this year's winner. After my presentation to his class in February 2021, I had a Teams meeting with him about further education. He was already considering ICS Tutorship among other studies. This enthusiasm for learning more in shipping gives me so much energy." Jesper Sebbelin FICS, Director ITC Denmark.

The Denmark Branch

The Denmark Branch of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers was founded in September 2010. Every year a considerable number of students study with the Denmark Branch of the Institute to gain further qualifications, and Branch activities are a mix of educational and social, including seminars and similar events.

"As Chairman of the Denmark Branch, I fully support Jesper and his initiative in introducing "the best student" award and giving Tutorship study as a prize. I think it is a great way to motivate shipping trainees to continue their education and at the same become a part of the ICS family with all it benefits." Palle Klug FICS, Chairman, ICS Denmark Branch.

The Branch has excellent links with the local shipping community as well as the relevant maritime bodies and associations located in Denmark. Members of the Denmark Branch are mainly ship agents and shipbrokers, but other areas from the maritime industry such as agency, ship owning, ship financing, and liner shipping are also represented.

Jesper believes in long-term strategic alliances with complementary business associations. The ITC reaches out to teaching bodies in order to consistently develop best-practice and knowledge sharing.
