ICS Open Info Night - Montreal - Sep 27th 2017

The Canada Branch held an open info night in Montreal on September 27th 2017. This was part of a global effort by the Institute to reach out to prospective students and included events in over 20 locations in North America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. A total of eight people attended the Montreal session including staff from major bulk operators and with backgrounds as varied as market research, maritime law and marine engineering.

The evening began with a presentation on the Institute and the Canada Branch's background and activities. Students were then shown the a video entitled "Why Study with the Institute?". This was followed by a detailed discussion of the types of qualifications and the methods of study offered and addressed various issues such as cost, duration, resources and support. Students were also guided through the Institute website, shown samples of textbooks and past exams and given "Studying with the Institute" brochures. The newly launched WISTA-ICS scholarships for members of the WISTA (Women's International Shipping & Trading Association) was also mentioned!

The Canada Branch in Montreal wishes to thank the Shipping Federation of Canada for hosting this event in their boardroom. For those who would have liked to attend but missed it, please look out for the next one - the Institute tries to hold these open info nights twice a year. Meantime, prospective students are encouraged to contact the Canada Branch should they have any questions.

Vancouver event

The Canada branch in Vancouver participated in another successful global open night as well on September 26th, 2017. Four prospective students attended this event from UBC (University of British Columbia) from programs such as Supply Chain Management Studies, Freight Forwarding and Marine Engineering. The event was well received and the participants appreciated again the opportunity to learn more about the Institute, specifically how they can benefit and ask any questions about professions within the shipping industry and the maritime field as a whole. We are pleased to share feedback from a participant:

"I just wanted to thank you again for a lovely evening at the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers tonight. I definitely learned a lot and am even more excited by the prospect of working in the shipping industry.

I recall you mentioning a few events coming up in November. As I said, I'm very interested in attending and would love to open the opportunity to other students in the Supply Chain Management Club as well."

From the participants, one person is expected to sign up for the May exams in 2018. The event has also opened up the opportunity to reach out to more students at the University of British Columbia. The Canada Branch is grateful for the opportunity to participate in the Institute Global Open Day and looks forward to holding similar events for potential students as well members in the future.
