IMO Events - World Maritime Day 2023

The World Maritime Day 2023 mega event was organized at the Pearl Continental Hotel, Karachi. This year the event got more significance for the maritime fraternity as this was celebrated with the Maritime Training Institute, Pakistan 25th Anniversary.

 

Keeping its tradition of celebrating the WORLD MARITIME DAY, for more than three decades,

  • The Nautical Institute, UK - Pakistan Branch in collaboration with
  • The Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers, Pakistan chapter and
  • The Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport, Pakistan organized one day Seminar to celebrate IMO World Maritime Day 2023.

The theme for year 2023, as approved by the council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is:

 

IMO: "MARPOL at 50 - Our commitment goes on"

The event celebration comprised of three sessions which was attended by well-known maritime national and foreign professionals, entrepreneurs, maritime students, Pakistan naval officers and Government officials. International participation via Zoom Meeting was arranged and the event was attended on Zoom as well.

 

The first - Inaugural session commenced with the recitation of the holy Quran followed by the speech of Maritime Industry officials.

 

H.E KITACK LIM, Secretary-General, International Maritime Organization video message was displayed. Captain John Lloyd, Chief Execute, the Nautical Institute - UK exclusive video message was displayed.

 

Paul Sainthouse, International President of the Chartered Institute of the Logistics & Transport - UK video message was displayed.

 

On this auspicious occasion, the chief guest H.E. Conrad Tribble, Consul General, U.S. Consulate General Karachi addressed the gathering and stressed the US-Pakistan partnership to ensure proper waste disposal. Guest of Honor

H.E. Martin Dawson, Deputy Head of Mission - UK, Karachi, H.E. Jakob Linulf, Ambassordor of Denmark for Pakistan, Capt Khalil ur Rahman, Chairman Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers - Pakistan and Capt Anwer Shah, Ex Director PNSC board addressed the importance of MARPOL and implementation at Pakistani ports to ensure compliance. Madam Irum Tanveer, Director General, Press Information Department address the importance of showcasing the beautiful seafront of Pakistan to the world by broadcasting through International media.

 

Captain. S. M. Ajmal Mahmoodi, International Vice President and Chairman, The Nautical Institute - Pakistan during his keynote address stated that it is an important event celebrated globally to provide an opportunity to give focus and value to the shipping and maritime industry. He thanked all for coming and attending this mega event.

 

In the end of first session, 'Beacon of Maritime Award' presented to Capt. Mahmoodi who devoted his live for uplifting the maritime community of Pakistan by special committee of PMNOA and award was sponsored by Global Radiance Group of Companies. Expression of gratitude and appreciation address was given by Lt. Col (R) Kaukab Mughal, Honorary Secretary, Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport - Pakistan. Inaugural session concluded with presentation of mementos and group photos.

 

The Second - Technical session was rapporteur by Ayesha Masood Khawaja Executive Director SeaCare Pakistan (Private) Limited and chaired by Madam Alia Shahid, Director General, Ministry of Maritime of Affairs, Govt. of Pakistan. In this session, 11 papers were presented by different segment of maritime industry.

  • Captain Qasim Saeed, Chief Nautical Surveyor & Principal Examiner, Govt. of Pakistan presented his paper on
  • Fayyaz Rasool, Manager Marine Pollution Control Dept., Karachi Port Trust presented his presentation on
    • Captain Muhammad Adeel Farooq, MSQ Superintendent, Global Radiance Group of Maritime Companies gave his presentation on MARPOL Implementation - Role and challenges for technical ship management,
    • Captain Rashid Anwer, presented his paper "has the convention delivered on promise",
    • Mrs. Sawera Saulat Majeed, Director, Terra-Marine Agencies (Pvt.) Ltd. presented her paper on Annex VI prevention of Air Pollution from ships.
    • Captain Muhammad Ejaz, Marine Superintendent, PNSC presented his paper on MARPOL compliance by Pakistan National Shipping Corporation vessels,
    • Dr. Nuzhat Khan, CEO, Blue Net Plus presented her paper on Ballast Water Management: Challenges and Opportunities,
    • Zack H. Abdi, Managing Director of Proventus Inc. showcased a presentation on Global effort to Combat Marine Pollution,
    • Captain Mansoor ul Islam, presented his paper on MARPOL in Pakistan: A comprehensive approach to marine pollution prevention,
    • Syed Adnan Mahmoodi spoke on the journey of 25 years of premier Maritime Training Institute in the private sector and its accomplishment serving the nation in respect to providing first class training and education by use of state of the art marine simulators,
    • And in the end last paper by Anwar un Nabi, maritime professional (GRG Technical Advisor) presented his paper on MARPOL limitations & Tasman Spirit Oil Spill Catastrophe

Expression of gratitude and appreciation address was given by Captain Farid Masood (LNG Master Mariner) and session chair summed up the session and appreciated the speakers for their valuable papers.

The third - Closing session was attended by maritime fraternity and professionals with their spouse. Col (R) Muhammad Tariq Siddiqui, Executive Director, Pakistan Global Radiance Group of Maritime Companies welcomed the chief gust and maritime profession for attending this important event. Captain Mahmoodi, International Vice President of the Nautical Institute appreciated the organizers for successfully conducting of this mega event.

Captain Ali Asghar Khan, CEO of SeaCare Pakistan Pvt. Ltd. presented the recommendations of the seminar.

Chief Guest of the session, Rear Admiral (R) Syed Hasan Nasar Shah HI (M), Chairman, Port Qasim Authority addressed the gathering and expressed his thoughts about the importance of this industry and witness the efforts to organize such a mega event.

In the end of closing session, Capt. Rashid Anwar, Principal, Maritime Training Institute thanked sponsors, partners for their continuous support and electronic/print media for making this event a success and remarkable memory. While he also thanked all for coming and participating in the event.
