The Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (UK) Sri Lanka Branch and The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Sri Lanka jointly hosted an evening seminar to coincide with the World Maritime Day 2025 on September 25 at the OPA Auditorium.
The event brought together over 100 participants, including maritime professionals, academics, and industry leaders, to reflect on the significance of the maritime & Oceanology sector towards global trade, economic and sustainable development.
The seminar was held under the theme "Our Ocean, Our Duty: Protecting Today, Prospering Tomorrow".
Two renowned speakers in the maritime sector addressed the gathering.
Prof. P. B. Terney Pradeep Kumara, Director General, Department of Coast Conservation and Coastal Resource Management, who presented on "Blue Economy & Marine Development: Future Potentials"
Capt. Peshala Medagama, Vice President - Maritime, International Cooperation & Foreign Projects, CINEC Campus (Pvt) Ltd
With their years of experience and expertise in maritime education, research, and development, provided participants with valuable insight in to the sector, current challenges and on the untapped opportunities in the sector.
Both the speakers called upon the audience to reflect on the responsibilities in managing the ocean and its resources by various stakeholders while exploring the immense opportunities it's provides to the mankind for innovation and sustainable progress.
Speeches was followed by a panel discussion moderated by Capt. Lalin de Silva, Senior Master Mariner and Maritime Educationalist. The panel comprised both the speakers and Capt. Upul Peiris, Director of Navigation at the Merchant Shipping Secretariat.
Panel was steered by an insightful and interactive dialogue with the speakers and the audience on the key trends, challenges, and future directions of the maritime industry.
The event reaffirmed the central role of the maritime sector in advancing trade, supporting economies, and above all protection of the ocean and oceanography for the future generations.
The seminar also highlighted the need for strong partnerships between professional bodies such as CILT and ICS to continue with education in the maritime sector to produce professionals for the sustainability and for capacity building within the industry.
The program concluded with a sense of optimism and renewed commitment among participants, who left inspired to uphold the principles of responsibility and opportunity in shaping the future of the maritime sector.
