Baltic Exchange and Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers Lectures for 2022

For the fifth year the Baltic Exchange and Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers present a series of lectures intended to support and develop those working in chartering and operations.

Taking place every other month, lectures are free to employees at Baltic and ICS members and company members.

The series is aimed at supporting those developing careers in shipping and encouraging better advocacy across a future generation of industry leaders and is supported by all the major broking houses and a wide cross-section of principals.

Baltic Exchange and Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers lectures restart in June 2022 with a new format to benefit all our Members worldwide.

We are incredibly proud that this series has now reached the fifth cycle and both organisations were keen to continue with this project as we see the interest of hundreds of members for each of our dates.

We are also thrilled to report that in some locations, the local maritime groups of young shipping professionals have offered their support to our series, and are excited to sign up selected groups of their own members. This curiosity from groups of younger maritime people shows us the usefulness of these lectures, as long as we ensure we protect these as part of our benefits to members.

Event Information

In recent months, just to add to the cumulative challenges in global shipping, geopolitical events have sent shock waves through the market. The second event of this year's series will provide the very latest update on the continuously developing sanctions environment. Our expert legal panel will also be joined by perspectives on the tanker market from the research team at a London broker, together with insights from a diverse shipowning group on managing through the turbulence and the increasingly complex basket of commercial risks with which to contend.

Moderator: Guy Main FICS, Senior Manager (Partner Equivalent), HFW

Guy Main is a Senior Manager (Partner equivalent) at HFW who specialises in shipping litigation.  Guy handles all aspects of casualty work, and specialises in disputes on quantum.  He has considerable experience in dealing with all aspects of damages in Admiralty claims, as well as claims for port damage, crane and related (un)loader damage, unsafe port and related types of claim.  He also advises on General Average matters as well as aspects of chartering and sale & purchase practice, procedure and disagreements.

Guy joined HFW in 1998 after 18 years as a shipbroker.  Guy has been based in London, Hong Kong and Geneva.  He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers and a Member of the Baltic Exchange.

Panelist: Anthony Woolich, Partner, HFW

Anthony Woolich is a Partner at HFW who specialises in sanctions and export control, competition law and trade regulation. He is admitted in England and Wales, the Republic of Ireland and the Dutch section of the Brussels Bar.  Anthony was recently selected by his peers for inclusion in the 11^th Edition of The Best Lawyers^TM in the United Kingdom.  In 2016 he was ranked 7 in the most influential 10 lawyers in shipping worldwide by Lloyd's List.  He is ranked in the major legal directories: Chambers has commented: "Clients appreciate that Anthony Woolich's 'advice is clear, concise and is explained in terms that are easily understood by all levels and departments.'" Who's Who Legal quotes commentators referring to his "first-class know-how" in sanctions.

Panelist: Capt Philip H Bacon FICS, Vice-President of Operations, Siem Shipping Ltd, a multi-fleet shipowning group. Since 2014 he has consulted and provided expert witness through his company Icthus Marine. Following 7 years' naval and merchant navy education in both engine and deck, Philip sailed on Merchant ships including chemical and gas tankers, general cargo and PSVs. In the shore-based part of his career, he has worked for shipowners from Shell and K-Line to Gearbulk and AM Nomikos in the commercial management of most types of ship. In this period he undertook extensive training relating to the commercial, management, contractual and legal aspects of shipping. Philip has worked with the fixing and execution of a broad variety of charter-parties and contracts of affreightment, across a spectrum of trades, vessel and cargo types.

Philip has an MBA from the Cranfield School of Management, is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers, a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, a supporting member of the LMAA, in addition to his nautical degree and hazardous cargo qualifications. Philip is a member of the Baltic Exchange and currently serves on the Membership Council, as Hon Sec of the Sailing Association, and supports the Expert Witness Association administratively.

Panelist: Jake Seed MICS, Research Analyst, Galbraiths

Jake is a graduate of Queen Mary, University of London with a BSc (Hons) in Economics. In 2015, following a stint with Cockett Marine Oil, he joined the Galbraiths' Research Team. As a Research Analyst, he works on both internal and external projects across a range of shipping segments. He presents regularly to clients and at industry conferences, in particular covering the Crude & Product tanker markets. Jake is a Member of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers.

For the last couple of years, we had to move our events online. We received good feedback and therefore we are confident that the webinar formula will still constitute a viable alternative. Equally, we are eager to resume our traditional face-to-face sessions where possible. We will consider the 'hybrid' format too on a case by case basis.
