Topic - Ballast Water Management Systems (BWMSs) - Owners' Perspective

Saga Shipholding has completed the installation of Ballast Systems (BS) throughout its entire fleet of 34 advanced open hatch cargo vessels. In doing so, Saga has become the world's first shipowner to fit ballast water treatment (BWT) systems that are USCG compliant throughout a fleet of this magnitude.

Speaker - Mr. Nils Otto Bjorhovde, Technical manager at Saga Shipholding (Norway) AS, a subsidiary of NYK Tokyo. The company owns and manages 34 open hatch, box shaped vessels for pulp, general and bulk cargoes.

Mr. Nils Otto will share his experience and thoughts on following topical subjects - How BWMS has evolved over the last 10 years; Why owners are not installing the system; Loopholes / Extension in compliance; What is in store for ship owning companies in future with respect to BWMS; Broad strategies that a shipping firm should employ to survive & succeed especially with regard to present & future global regulations and their compliance.

The Master of Ceremonies (M.C or emcee) is Ms. Yu Shen an aspiring student who plans to ICS PQE after her Masters. She is presently a Master student of International shipping and transport logistics at Hong Kong Polytechnic University; previously graduated from Shanghai Maritime University in International shipping Management in 2017. She is interested in shipping industry and dedicated to become a shipping woman.
