ICS TUTOR - William Simper FICS
My career in shipping began in the offices of Stephenson Clark Shipping in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1970. Trained in tramp and liner trades I quickly moved through a range of companies including Bell Line Container Service, and Athel Line Limited in London. My skills and abilities were and still are in ship owning and ship management which were developed at United Molasses - a division of Tate and Lyle Industries London where I was appointed Technical Manager. I was responsible for their fleet operations including all aspects of quality control. I was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers in 1979. After several years running businesses including London Cargo Consultants Limited and Global Marine Surveying Limited, in 2004 I moved into education and joined Tutorship. I joined the College of Central London in 2010 where I was elected lecturer in maritime studies and assessor. I completed a degree in teaching in 2013 and was elected, by examination, a member of the Institute for Learning in 2014. In 2017 I continued assessment in a BA (Hons) in English. In my role as both lead and assistant examiner at the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers I vigorously pursue a perspicuous and empathetic approach to education in an evolving global shipping community. We have a valuable role to play at the London School of Shipping in the professional development of our members who uphold the values, display the skills and have the aptitudes that are demanded in shipping today.
