Dissertation
Dissertation is an alternative pathway to membership, and may be
suitable for people who already have experience in the shipping
industry and would like to become part of the Institute.
Specific criteria must be met for an applicant to apply for
membership via dissertation. A candidate must:
1. be over 35 years of age.
2. have at least 10 years experience in the commercial
shipping industry.
3. have completed appointments that demonstrate sufficient
professional experience to warrant entry by this route.
If you would like to submit a dissertation on the basis of the
above criteria, the following procedure applies:
- Complete the Membership via Dissertation Part A form and
forward it to either the local ICS branch
or ICS head office in London for approval. On the form you
will be required to propose the Dissertation title, supported by a
500 word synopsis.
- On receiving approval to apply for membership in this way, you
should submit the Dissertation which must be a treatise of
15,000-20,000 words, containing original information on a subject
that has been newly researched and documented. The Dissertation
must be presented within six months of the "agreed" starting
date to either the local branch or head office, with a payment of
£500. Notes on writing a professional Dissertation are available
from the Education department.
- The Dissertation will be marked by an expert in the
Dissertation's subject and assessed by at least 2 other readers,
one of whom will be a member of the Institute's Education and
Training Committee.
- Please note that the copyright of all successful Dissertations
will belong to ICS and a copy will be available for its members on
the Members only area of this website.
- When your Dissertation has been assessed and approved you
should complete the Membership via Dissertation Application form
and forward it either the local ICS branch or ICS head office in
London.
On election to membership the applicant will be required to pay
the appropriate Membership subscription.
