Candidates with relevant professional or educational qualifications, validated
by ICS, may apply for exemptions to a maximum of four subjects.
Students can sit the ICS Professional Qualifying Examinations annually. If
successful and following a four year aggregated period in the industry,
students can then apply for membership.
Alternatively they may sit the Foundation Diploma examination which has been
designed for those who are either new to the industry or do not want to take
the full ICS Professional Qualifying Exams (PQE) but do want to further their
knowledge of the shipping industry.
Both the ICS PQE and the Foundation Diploma are set and examined by ICS.
TutorShip is ICS' own distance learning programme that prepares candidates for
both the PQE and the Foundation Diploma.

"Within
months of passing my ICS exams, I was able to secure a
new job working in a tanker operations department. I soon
found I was drawing on the knowledge gained as a direct
result of studying for the exams. I was surprised at just
how relevant each of the different subjects were."

| EQUIVALENCE |
| As the Institute's
examinations are for entry into a professional body, the attainment of PQE has
no equivalence with an academic degree course. However on becoming a member of
ICS, a number of Universities including the CASS Business School, London and
Plymouth University consider membership to be equivalent to the entry level
requirement for a Master's degree programme. However to establish the exact
equivalence with a specific university individuals will need to approach the
admissions department of the respective university or college.
