BUSINESS OF SHIPPING

A one day introductory course for new entrants to the shipping industry as well as those who already work in international trading or shipping companies but who are not involved in the delivery of frontline shipping services.
The course gives a broad introduction to the range of operations and activities for those involved in moving goods from one place to another. Additionally it enhances the background knowledge of IT, accounting and administration staff. It is also very informative for those working in export and import manufacturing industries.
A lively interactive programme of lectures delivered by specialists in their field is backed up by a substantial hand-out pack. An attendance certificate is also given.
COURSE CONTENT
INTERNATIONAL TRADE
An introduction to global trading patterns, an explanation of the different ship types and ports, shipping registers, classification societies, international organisations.
SHIPPING COMPANIES AND THEIR PERSONNEL
An explanation of the different types of companies including their structures and management, company finance and ship mortgage.
PRACTITIONERS IN SHIPPING BUSINESS
An explanation of the roles of the Principals:
Ship-owners, Ship managers, Charterers, Insurers and the Intermediaries: Port Agents, Liner Agents, Chartering Agents and Brokers. Discussion on the different ship types - dry cargo, tankers, specialist, container and ro-ro - and their developments including ship recognition, construction, stability, towage and ship registration.
THE VOYAGE
Bulk cargo - negotiating the fixture.
Container Liner cargo - completing a Charter party.
PORTS AND TERMINALS
Explanation of why ports are located where they are and the different types of cargoes being moved around the world in ships.
SHIPPING AND THE ENVIRONMENT
Introduction to shipping legislation especially those governing safety and ship management.
CAREER DEVELOPMENT
A discussion of the training and education opportunities.
