Topics :

1. Knowing your business partners & managing counterparty risk.

This lecture will be both practical and legal. It will discuss common pitfalls (including that parties often do not know exactly who they have contracted with), explain what the consequences can be and what might be done to avoid these pitfalls.

2. Charterers are late paying hire - what to do?

In the current market this scenario is unfortunately increasingly common.

Again this lecture will aim to cover both legal the law and practical solutions. It will cover the recent decision in Spar Shipping AS v. Grand China Logistics Holding (Group) Co. Ltd [2015] EWHC 718 (Comm)).

Caroline Thomas

Caroline specialises in insurance, shipping and competition law with a focus on dispute resolution and regulation. She has worked with leading P&I Clubs, Charterers, Managers and Owners on avoiding and resolving "dry" shipping disputes. Caroline is admitted as a solicitor in England and Wales and in Hong Kong. She is also the chairwoman of the Hong Kong Insurance Law Association Limited.

Julian Clark

Julian joined Hill Dickinson as the new Global Head of Shipping on 16 January 2017. He specialises in casualty, marine insurance and charter disputes. He is an ex equity partner of HFW and one of the founding partners of Campbell Johnston Clark. He also helped set up the North of England's FD&D department back in 1990. Julian has for the past 10 years been ranked as a market leader in Chambers & Partners, The Legal 500 and US publication "Super Lawyers".
