TUTORSHIP

TutorShip is ICS’ own distance learning programme covering its syllabus and preparing students to take the Professional Qualifying Examinations (PQE) or the Foundation Diploma.
The courses are designed to meet the needs of personnel in all spheres of the shipping profession. Providing not only the necessary preparation for the ICS exams but also giving students an opportunity to broaden their understanding of the industry and develop career potential.
TutorShip courses are written by specialists in their field and updated regularly.

TUTORSHIP COURSE CONTENT
TutorShip is divided into three Groups. All candidates taking the PQE need to take Shipping Business in their first year. The remaining subjects may be taken in any order but candidates must sit a minimum of three subjects at their first attempt ('sitting' means making a genuine effort to answer five questions in each paper). The PQE must be completed within five years.
Group 1	Introduction to Shipping Legal Principles in Shipping Business Economics of Sea Transport & International Trade Shipping Business (compulsory in first year)
Group 2	Dry Cargo Chartering Ship Operations & Management Ship Sale & Purchase Tanker Chartering Liner Trades Port Agency Logistics & Multi-modal Transport Port and Terminal Management
Group 3	Shipping Law Marine Insurance
METHOD OF STUDY
Students need to enrol with ICS in London or one of the 14 distance learning centres worldwide. Once enrolled students will be forwarded a course book and allocated a tutor who will guide them through their studies. All tutors are either practicing or recently retired and all will be specialists in their field.
TutorShip assignments are delivered either electronically – via email or fax – or by the normal postal system depending on the student’s preference.
Each course book contains self assessment and a further 10 “Test” questions and a mock exam that can be submitted for marking and comments to a tutor. Each assignment is returned by email within 7 – 10 working days. For full details of the ICS syllabus see the Professional Qualifying Examinations section.

REGISTRATION AND EXAMINATION ENTRY
All candidates for ICS examinations have to register as students of the Institute before they may enter for the examinations. Full details and registration forms may be found here
The examinations take place annually in April at centres around the world. The above dates apply also to those taking the exams at non-designated exam centres overseas or in the UK.
EXEMPTIONS
You may well qualify for exemptions against some of the subjects under examination, please check our exemptions page if you have or are studying at Universities or Colleges elsewhere.
TUTORSHIP FEES 2009-2010
For those students wishing to enroll and study TutorShip through London, the following fees apply. For those wishing to study through one of the worldwide distance learning centres, the fees may well vary to reflect the currency that the student earns in. Please check details for fees against each of the individual distance learning centres if you are planning to study outside the UK.
Cost per subject £295 Foundation Diploma course £550 (The Foundation Diploma is made up of Introduction to Shipping and one other Group Two subject) Advanced Diploma course £550 (The Advanced Diploma is made up of Shipping Business and one other Group Two subject)
PREP
In early March or April, ICS runs a PREP course in the UK – a weekend residential workshop where candidates of all ages and levels taking the ICS exams can attend tutorials in all subjects. See the PREP section for full details.
